Curtis Brown - Star BYU Running Back - And a Nice Guy
Saturday, October 21st, 2006 |
Tonight my mother-in-law and I were in Orem, waiting at a restaurant to be seated, when someone wearing BYU warm-ups sat down next to us with his wife. People all around were staring, and one guy came up and asked for an autograph. My mother-in-law asked him if he played football for BYU, to which he answered in the affirmative. She then asked if he played in the game that day at all, and if he was any good. He smiled and responded that he played a little bit. My mother-in-law then asked if he was the star, and he laughed. His wife said he was, with a smile. It turns out the football player we were sitting next to was Curtis Brown, and he is the star running back for BYU.
I was so impressed with this football player as both kids and adults came up to him to ask for his autograph, and congratulate him on a great game. (BYU beat UNLV 52-7, with Brown rushing for 148 yards.) Brown was very friendly, and thanked everyone for coming to the game, and for their support. He was very nice, as was his beautiful wife. It was great to see such a talented athlete be so down to earth and kind to his fans. A great article about Brown can be found here.

This last summer I was visiting my friend’s place to see his new baby. His parents and brothers and sisters were all there as well, including their spouses/fiancees and kids. Towards the end of the visit, his father announced that their daugher was getting married to Curtis. At that moment I thought to myself, “Is that Curtis Brown?” (he was there the entire time but I didn’t recognize him right away though I thought he looked familiar). He was very quiet and came across as humble and kind. I congratulated him on his success and wished him luck for the next year.
I agree — it is great to see a followed-by-the-press, talented individual treat others with kindness and respect.

I’ve known Curtis since he was in 3rd grade. My little brother was the one that talked him into playing on the pop warner football team. Curtis has always been a good kid. The last time I talked to him was after his freshman year, before I left for Iraq. He wasnt nearly a star like he is know, but I bet hes the same kid he was back then. curtis was always a polite kid, and respectful. The world needs more people like Curtis, especially an athlete that is a star and is considered a role model to young kids.
Thanks for your comments, Jeremy. You’re right - the world does need more people like Curtis, and kids definitely need great role models like him. (Oh, and thank your brother for convincing him to play Pop Warner!)
A side note - Thank you for your service in Iraq. May God bless you for your sacrifice and time spent serving this great country.
