Real Madrid vs. Real Salt Lake

Saturday, August 12th, 2006 |

Tonight my husband and I went to the Real Madrid vs. Real Salt Lake soccer game. We had been looking forward to the game for quite some time, and it certainly lived up to our expectations. David Beckham, star of Real Madrid (and the English national team, for that matter) played for the second half, and he was a lot of fun to watch. He did not score, but managed to pull off some amazing free kicks and passes. It was exciting for Salt Lake City to host such world-renowned players. Salt Lake hasn’t had athletes of this caliber since the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Rice-Eccles Stadium, where the game was played, was filled to capacity. This game was such a huge draw, and the crowds were pretty enthusiastic. Not as much so as the fans in Europe (I had the chance to see the Irish national team play a few years back in Ireland, and there’s nothing like loyal European fans.), but it was still a great game.

It was also announced that Real Salt Lake will finally be getting their stadium built in Sandy, Utah. Dave Checketts, the owner, had said August 12 was the date he would sell the team if Utah wouldn’t build a stadium. We got our wish, and now we get to keep our team. I’m so excited that RSL will FINALLY be getting a stadium built. It will be done in June 2008, as experts are estimating. Utah desperately needed a new, exciting sport, and one that is not run by Larry H. Miller.

The game went well tonight, with Real Madrid going on to win 2-0. They scored on a penalty kick in the first half, and then on a breakaway in the second half. Unfortunatley, one of the RSL players received a red card for tackling from behind, so that meant RSL had to play one man down. That was frustrating, and I felt that the red card was a bit harsh. RSL played with heart, however, and I have to admire them for their effort. Admittedly, I thought the game would be a bit more of a blowout. I was proud of RSL. It was fun to see the support at the game tonight, although I think most of the people there were there to see Beckham. The game was great fun, and I’m so glad that Salt Lake City was able to welcome such a world-class team as Real Madrid. Hopefully this is the beginning of great things to come!
